I think, when ratings resembled military ranks it was cooler than chess ratings. I know it's not academic and might seem rather harsh, but words like "colonel", "general", "captain", ... make you feel stronger.

I think, the best option is to let the user choose which color-rank mapping he likes better. I mean, wouldn't it be nice to be able to change it in your settings or even provide your custom mapping?
To me its not a good idea. In that case the mapping will be meaningless and it wont have much difference with a cool nick. Meaning of rank should be same to everyone otherwise no point in giving a rank.
Ok, then which one do you prefer? the military ones or the chess ratings? I have to confess that what annoys me is those repetitive "master master" suffixes ...
But here is other idea. The option could change ranks for all users but only in presentation phase. I.e. option will affect only mapping from "rank1, rank2, ... rankN" to either "acolyte, priest, ..., pope", or "novice, master, ..., grandmaster", or "private, sergeant, ..., field-marshal" when rendering the page.
This could be written in greasemonkey of course, but it would be better if javascript and option for it will be added on server side.
I totally support the return of the old ranks. My argument is that the love of problem solving , logical reasoning and learning that units the community of CodeForces is very strong that it can't be affected by using those military ranks. I think the vast majority of us will take it very easily. I think those old titles really fit the website's name , don't contradict the educational spirit and aims of the site , and can be in the long run a good notation to refer to the rank of someone on CodeForces.
Elegant point! I never really though about how perfect it fits the name of the website.
I also liked military ranks!
