SP1029's blog

I had a doubt regarding the codeforces delta calculation since some time and it would be great if someone could help to clarify it.

Suppose there are 2 participants, A and B with A's rating less than B's rating. If participant A performs better or equal to the participant B, then it would be expected that participant A has more positive delta as compared to B since A was expected to perform worse but performed better or equal. But I have noticed previously in some cases and also in the recently held https://codeforces.me/contest/2127 that this is not the case.

Example:

Could someone help with the confusion. Thanks a lot in advance!

Its because the Div 1 + 2 was the 6th contest of the user Mashirost and your rating is unstable in the first 6 contests that you participate in (its tentative). For more info you can check out this blog by Mike Rating changes

As stated in https://codeforces.me/blog/entry/77890 , new users' display rating is shown $$$1400$$$ lower than their true rating, and during the first $$$6$$$ contests the gap between these two ratings decrease. For the participant shown in your image, it was their $$$6$$$-th contest, which means that their true rating before the contest was actually $$$1696$$$ but it's shown $$$50$$$ lower. Therefore, you can assume that their real rating increase was only $$$90$$$, which is indeed lower than your rating increase.
