Guys is it better to do Competitive Programming or open source projects? I like both but some people says that focusing on one thing will be a better option. What do you think about this?

I do both. Started to program before 3 years, doing competitive programming for fun 2 years, working (develop web application back-end/front-end) 10 months.

Both are equally good. Honestly, if you want to choose sides, you should go for the one you think you would stay in. What I mean is, in the long term, what would you prefer ?

Would you want to be an open source contributor or would you want to be a problem solver ?

Would you want to know a lot of things about a lot of things or would you want to know how to solve problems ?

It's all on you buddy :)

Hope you find this useful !

EDIT: PS, this is only if you want to stick onto something. There are people who do both just like @sbakic ! You can do both for a little longer till you find a passion in either of these and then choose what you think would be better for you :D

Brain gets older with time.
My opinion is that we have to use its power on the most difficult stuff first. Learning algorithms at sixty is not as easy compared to when we are sixteen.
On the other hand, you will be much more valuable open-source contibutor at sixty than you are at sixteen.

I think timing is important.
