Handle name for gmail sign-iners

A friend of mine used their Gmail to login. Seems like their handle name has become the same as their gmail address, but without "@gmail.com". - Is what I'm correct? - Is there any way for changing their handle name?

Well, my handle is Lord_F and it's not my Gmail address, though I've always used Gmail login.

By the way, does anypony anybody know whether it's possible to enter with normal login/password instead of Gmail (I mean if registered via Gmail)?
