Competitive Programming isn’t defined by some ai model spitting solutions to problems. It’s not about shortcuts, cheats, or farming fake progress. cp is about the community itself, the people who struggle, learn, share, compete, and grow together. As long as there are members pushing themselves, helping others, and loving the challenge, cp will never die.

That "lame-ass bot spitting out solutions" (LOL) is already far more intelligent than you and all of the other people who are coping in response to the parent comment, in reasoning and logic in general. Your dull and unremarkable mind, and the dull and unremarkable thoughts it produces make you less worthy of being considered sentient than that very "lame-ass bot spitting out solutions", whose thoughts in basically any field will be more novel and enlightening than yours. If you must cope in public, then do so without pathetically disparaging superior intelligences to yours.

When the calculator was invented, many thought mathematicians would lose their role. In reality, mathematics only grew stronger.

Many chess engines can beat grandmasters — does that replace the role of chess players? No. In reality, chess players still exist. They actually use them to train and become stronger than previous generations.

After all, who would enjoy a show from a lifeless machine?

While disappointing, I feel like this was fairly expected, while the 6th place is very interesting, I believe they already got gold at IOI with o3 (though I presume there was some catch that the current situation doesn't have), and after the IMO gold, it would be foolish to assume that IOI would trip them up.

With that being said, this doesn't change anything. o3 already crushes online programming contests, and people will still do competitive programming for their enjoyment, even if AI becomes all-powerful.

Any GPT-5 user will complain about its hidden router and fairly dumb response. It suggests that OpenAI may be unwilling to let his user use their best reasoning model lol.

We can think about one thing. If GPT really has the ability to get 6th place in IOI, why don't they send it just after the IOI day 2 ended?

In my opinion GPT-5 is kinda overrated. You can easily tell that you’re speaking with an AI. Maybe they enchanced it's coding ability but, other aspects are very poor.

Was this validated by any 3rd party? Ideally it would be validated by IOI organizers. I think IMO organizers did not validate their results and in fact they disobeyed their requests of not publishing results on the day of the ceremony.

I put at least 1% chance of this being slightly fraud as the stakes of claiming to have the best AI model are pretty high

If humans had double the time they would perform better, I dont think that is true for GPT. If the contest was competed in teams of 2 or more, humans would also perform better. Not true for the model either. If humans had access to internet and pre written code they would perform better. Not true for the model either.

Where is the press release from IOI confirming this, or even mentioning the existence of an AI track? Don't see it on their website, only OpenAI being listed as a sponsor is the only mention.

Edit: From OpenAI:

"For the IOI online AI track, we used an API to access problems and submit solutions without direct supervision from the contest organizers."

This doesn't seem legitimate at all. Why not make an official AI track like they did for IMO, where everyone can participate in a verifiable way? OpenAI is a top-level sponsor and could have organized the system but chose not to. By the way, that type of track existed for the IMO, but none of the big labs that need to claim a gold used it for "reasons". This is a poor and unverifiable result as typical from ClosedAI.

I found the following in the March IC meeting minutes:

"Regarding the AI participation option, we considered different formats and ITC very strongly insisted on the format of such competition being that any interested "AI contestant" should bring their own hardware onsite to the IOI, so that we work on accommodating and isolating them so that they only connect to the Contest Management System network and their hardware directly makes submissions during the contest under the same conditions as contestants. Thus, we started some interesting AI participation rules discussions within ISC during the March meeting and will continue working towards defining such rules in case we have AI participation in IOI 2025, and we are only considering this onsite "bring their own hardware" participation option as advised by ITC."

So unless something changed since March, either they would have brought their own hardware to Bolivia (which would surely imply some kind of supervision from the contest organizers), or it's completely unofficial.

OpenAI should bring their servers to Bolivia to even out the playing field as OpenAI didn't have to deal with serious altitude issues

LLMs got just good enough to screw people div 2 and below. I believe it performs exceptionally well at IOI because the questions are more standard (correct me if I am wrong, never did IOI, in fact I didn't even code when I was in highschool)

We believe CP never die. I don't belive it because of omnipotence paradox. I think the key reason is that it can have network during the competition and generate long code quickly.

I don't see what the omnipotence paradox has to do with anything.

I believe competitive programming won't die for a much simpler reason — it is ultimately a recreational activity, and we like doing it. Computers beat humans in games like chess and Go years ago, are they dead? We will adapt if necessary, but I see little risk of the sport dying out because of AI.
