Errichto's blog

By Errichto, 6 years ago, In English

I got a private message in Codeforces:

"hey u r on cf and toc both . how r problems at toc div1 for gcj and fb hc ? for practicing."

I told the guy to use full words and to start the beginning of a sentence with uppercase, so it would be easier to understand him. And he indeed sent me a version that is easy to read!

"ok ! Hey , you use both codeforces and topcoder ! I wanna know How are problems at topcoder division 1 for practicing for google code jam and facebook hacker cup !
Which is the best Platform for it !"

So much better! Remove an unnecessary space character before punctuation marks (dots, exclamation marks, etc.) and you have proper grammar and everything. I also recommend using uppercase for abbreviations like CF, TC, FHC, GCJ. My English isn't perfect either, but I'm learning. And I use Grammarly (a free add-on with optional premium) that finds a lot of errors, typos, and missing commas. For example, I've just written "grammarly" and it suggested correcting it to "Grammarly". Fair enough. Btw. my answer was: Topcoder and Atcoder for GCJ, Codeforces and Codechef for FHC.

Anyway, what did make you proud of Codeforces recently? Did you see some post that asked for help with a problem and wasn't downvoted into oblivion? Or maybe somebody wanted to share their private videos for free? Share your stories!

Does anybody remember about the "TOP" section for interesting blogs? I didn't. Let's make a survey.

Downvote this comment if you've used the "TOP" section in the last month, and upvote otherwise.

I would love to use that, it's really a nice thing, but it's just full of "Codeforces round #xxx" and "Codeforces round #xxx editorial" which makes it completely useless.

Maybe it should be changed to EDU (recent tutorial-style blogs)?

Or maybe blogs from the main page should be excluded? So there would be no round announcements.

Looks like Codeforces needs some basic survey functionality. Upvote/Downvote is rather confusing..

Numb told me I look like his dog.

Or maybe somebody wanted to share their private videos for free?

Uhhh, I'd rather not see those.

I uninstalled grammarly because I wasn't sure if it keep information secret (important when writing problem statements)

jinlifu1999's round announcement not getting downvoted despite being unrated was pretty nice to see. Authors used to get blamed for technical issues but it seems like CF's community is more understanding now.

One of my favorite things is seeing people constantly helping each other both here in the comments and in the Discord server. Also, there are a lot of super nice blogs that people write here for free, and I'm grateful for that!

That being said, I'd also like to see a blog about negative things, which make people ashamed rather than proud.

Waiting (potentially forever) till someone who writes better than me does is probably what I'm going to do, but thanks for the suggestion anyway :)

I have received several private messages about how to practice.

One of them told me that he wasn't preparing for any olympiad or competitions. He said,"i found competitive programming so fun! and i want to improve at it to have more fun."

I was moved when I received this message, thinking of myself in the past. I began to study competitive programming only because of fun, too. But now I also study for winning, medal, the entrance of the university and so on.

So you are proud of "unethical and ugly behaving" people. Are you happy with that?

When CF added "Div 3" it was a great thing that makes new users proud of codeforces because they can solve some easy problems and see nice problems.
