Yes their existance is necessary thats why they need to multiply and hence inorder to exist in this world they have fruits which bear seeds. But i wont prefer growing them in my garden, they are scary. :)

Isn't every node on the tree just a fruit? Otherwise, the only round thing that can be connected by the trunk of a tree is a burl.

Yes, but people don't eat them as sometimes it takes a log of the tree to remove them.
