Hi everyone!

I built an Android app called Contest Notifier because I sometimes missed coding contests. I would forget to check emails or get busy with something else and completely forget about a contest I wanted to participate in.

So, I made this app to bring upcoming contests from Codeforces, CodeChef, and LeetCode into one place. It also sends you a small reminder 10 minutes before a contest starts, so you have time to get ready.

You can try it here: https://github.com/Anxhul10/contest-notifier-apk/releases

Any feedback or contributions are welcome!

Thanks for reading!

10 minutes feels too short to get ready for me, especially when you're still stuck in other things. Perhaps a customizable time from 10 minutes to like an hour (maybe more) would be really epic :)

Yeah, totally agree! If someone is busy with other things, 10 minutes might not be enough time to get ready for a contest.

For now, I was thinking of adding two reminders: one hour before the contest and another 10 minutes before it starts.

The idea of customizable reminder times is really great, and I'll definitely consider implementing it. It might take a bit more work, but it would make the app much more useful!

Hello! How does the app work, and will there be a version for laptops/PCs?

The app fetches upcoming contests from LeetCode, Codeforces, and CodeChef through my backend hosted on Render. Whenever the app starts, it makes API requests to retrieve the contests, sorts them by how soon they start, and displays them in the app.

It also schedules notifications for upcoming contests, so you don't have to keep checking websites or worry about missing a contest. This feature was introduced in PR #3.

Currently, the app is available for Android. I haven't planned a laptop/PC version yet, but it's something I could consider in the future.

How long did you work on this app, on which platform (program), in what programming language, and what advice can you give about app development?

It took me around a month to build the app. I had the idea for a while, but I couldn't figure out how to approach Android development at first. Coming from a web development background, app development felt a bit more challenging to me.

The Android app is built using Kotlin and the backend is written in JavaScript using Node.js and Express, hosted on Render.

To be honest, I'm still new to Android development myself, so I don't have a ton of advice yet. But I'd say start with a small problem you actually face, build something useful around it, and learn as you go. Don't wait until you know everything before starting. You'll figure out a lot of things along the way that tutorials alone won't teach you.

if you are needing an app to remind you for contest then, I doubt your competitive programmership

Fair point, but I don't think being a competitive programmer means you never forget about a contest. Sometimes I'm solving problems on another platform, busy with something else, or something unexpected comes up. I built this app because I enjoy competitive programming, and I wanted a simple way to stay updated on contests across platforms without having to check each one manually. It's more about convenience than commitment.
